In Prayer and Service: The Order of Malta in Greece Pays Tribute to Pope Francis

From April 25th to April 27th, 2025, Volunteers of the Order of Malta in Greece participated in the ceremonies and services organized for the funeral of Pope Francis.

In local parishes people came in big numbers to pay their respects and pray for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis. In Greece, there was a solemn ceremony, held in the Catholic Cathedral of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, that was attended by representatives of the Ecumenical Orthodox Patriarchate, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Evangelical Church, the Anglican Church, the Greek Coptic Church, the Armenian Orthodox Church, Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, the Jewish community, and the Muslim community, by members of the diplomatic corps, members of the Greek government, members of the parliament, and by members and representatives of the Greek municipal and regional authorities.

The Volunteers assisted pilgrims, elderly people, and visitors.  Their presence reflected the Order’s continuing mission of charity, medical assistance, and support for those in need during major religious events. During the days of mourning, Volunteers also participated in moments of prayer and remembrance. The participation of the Greek Volunteers highlighted the values of solidarity, compassion, and Christian service promoted by the Order worldwide.

The ceremonies concluded on April 27th , 2025, with thousands of faithful continuing to visit Rome in memory of Pope Francis.
